A sharp rise in fuel prices is driving Pakistani consumers toward electric mobility, creating an unexpected surge in demand for electric scooters and bikes. This growing interest has now led to supply shortages, with several popular models becoming difficult to find in the local market.

Dealers report extended delivery timelines of up to 30 days, as supply struggles to keep pace with demand. Buyers are also paying additional “own money,” ranging between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000, to secure early deliveries of in-demand models like T5-L electric scooter, Velax electric bike, and M3-H electric scooter.

The shortage is largely attributed to limited availability of completely knocked down (CKD) kits, which are essential for assembling electric vehicles locally. Disruptions in supply chains and rising import constraints have further compounded the issue, restricting production capacity for manufacturers.

Industry estimates highlight the scale of this shift, with approximately 40,000 electric two-wheelers sold in April alone. Notably, electric scooters accounted for nearly 90 percent of these sales, reflecting their affordability and convenience for urban commuters.

The increasing popularity of EV bikes signals a broader transition toward cost-effective and environmentally friendly transportation. With petrol prices continuing to fluctuate, many consumers are turning to electric alternatives to reduce daily commuting expenses.

However, the current demand-supply gap poses challenges for both buyers and sellers. While consumers face longer wait times and higher upfront costs, dealers are struggling to maintain inventory levels amid rising interest.

Experts suggest that improving local manufacturing capacity and ensuring a steady supply of CKD kits will be critical to stabilizing the market. Policy support, incentives, and infrastructure development could further accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Pakistan.

As the EV sector gains momentum, addressing these bottlenecks will be essential to sustain growth and make electric mobility more accessible. The ongoing shortage highlights both the opportunity and the urgency for investment in Pakistan’s evolving transport landscape.
