Use as much AC in winters: Government announces big relief Rs 26 per unit for December, January, February

The Prime Minister has introduced the Bijli Sahulat Package, a huge relief measure in terms of electricity tariff for winter this year, that will come into effect in December, January, and February. This measure is expected to be somewhat relief-giving for household and industrial consumers where energy prices are becoming high.

The package would bring relief of Rs 26 per unit for all the consumer categories. Even commercial consumers will see some respite through reduction up to Rs 22.71 per unit, and industrial consumers will also experience some respite through tariffs reduction up to Rs 15.05 per unit. Prime Minister announced this while addressing an event organised on Youm-e-Iqbal.

The Power Division said the relief will be applicable for those who increase their electricity consumption by at least 25% compared to the same period last year. This incentive is supposed to provide a financial respite while aiming at higher usage.

NEPRA has been advised to raise electric power tariffs nationwide by Rs 2.82 per unit as part of quarterly adjustments. The proposed hike, which will put an extra burden of Rs 8.73 billion on consumers, represents continuing efforts to control rocketing energy costs.

NEPRA has already received the formal request of the gas alliance for the increase in tariffs. NEPRA has scheduled a hearing for November 20. The hike will largely affect electricity bills of all cities including Karachi and be a burden on consumers during the first quarter of the present fiscal year.

This comes at a time that would otherwise be characterized as cost-inflationary, with the Bijli Sahulat Package arriving to offer relief. He said that this package stated the governments were committed to reducing the burden of cost inflation on citizens while working towards economic stability.
