Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his commitment to the achievement of $25 billion IT exports target within the next three years, focusing on telecom sector development in Pakistan, in continuation of the government’s sustained efforts. The Prime Minister discussed key updates regarding digital transformation with a five-member VEON Group delegation led by Chairman Augie K. Fabela.
In the meeting on Friday, Shehbaz Sharif reported that the government is moving plans forward to introduce 5G internet services. The move said to bring high-speed and reliable internet to remote areas, an imperative to Pakistan’s vision of Digital Pakistan. The Prime Minister was of the view that it will play a very pivotal role in the modernization of the country’s economics and help create a cashless digital economy.
Shehbaz appreciated the contributions of Jazz, a subsidiary of VEON, to Pakistan’s telecom and financial technology sectors. The minister informed that the government was open to discussing and working with VEON on matters related to IT, digitization, and artificial intelligence, as these are issues that have been considered significant for the development of the country’s digital initiative.
Members of the VEON Group delegation marked Pakistan positively for an attractive investment destination for both IT and telecom sectors. In addition, they appreciated the efforts put in by the government to attain a stable national economy, thereby adding more scope for growth in these sectors.
The conference featured prominent heads of state, like Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunications, and Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State for Finance and Revenue. This conference is the next step for Pakistan in furthering its development of information infrastructure and its status in the global telecom and IT market.
