The University of Lahore (UOL) has reached a significant milestone in Pakistan’s higher education landscape by introducing the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing through its Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and Lahore School of Nursing (LSN). With this launch, UOL has become the first university in Punjab to offer a PhD in Nursing, opening new opportunities for advanced nursing education, research, and professional development.
The introduction of the doctoral program represents a major step toward strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare education system. It provides nursing professionals with the opportunity to pursue the highest academic qualification in their field without having to seek specialized doctoral education abroad.
According to the university, the new PhD program reflects its continued commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and research-driven healthcare education. By expanding its nursing curriculum to the doctoral level, UOL aims to develop highly qualified professionals capable of contributing to evidence-based healthcare practices and policy reforms.
The PhD in Nursing has been designed to prepare nurse scientists, healthcare researchers, educators, policymakers, and clinical leaders who can address the evolving challenges facing Pakistan’s healthcare sector. The program will focus on promoting indigenous research, advancing clinical practice, and supporting the development of healthcare policies through scientific evidence.
With the launch of the doctoral degree, the Lahore School of Nursing now offers a complete academic pathway for aspiring nurses. Students can progress from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Post RN programs to the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and ultimately pursue a PhD, creating a comprehensive educational framework within a single institution.
The university stated that all nursing programs offered by LSN—including BSN, Post RN, MSN, and the newly launched PhD—are accredited by the Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PN&MC) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC). These accreditations ensure that graduates receive education aligned with national academic and professional standards.
Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Sarfraz Masih, Principal of the Lahore School of Nursing, said the launch of Punjab’s first PhD in Nursing demonstrates the university’s commitment to excellence and innovation in health sciences education. He added that the program is expected to empower nursing professionals to make meaningful contributions in research, education, clinical practice, and healthcare policymaking.
Doctoral students enrolled in the program will benefit from modern academic facilities, advanced laboratories, multidisciplinary research opportunities, and clinical training through UOL-affiliated teaching hospitals. The university also plans to strengthen academic partnerships that encourage collaborative research and leadership development across healthcare disciplines.
The launch further reinforces the University of Lahore’s growing reputation in higher education. UOL has continued to improve its standing in international university rankings, reflecting its emphasis on academic quality, sustainability, and research excellence.
According to the university, it is ranked 951–1000 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 187th in Asia. It is also the only private-sector university in Pakistan to receive the QS 5-Star University Rating 2026. In addition, UOL is ranked 601–800 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and secured first place among Pakistani universities and 71st globally in the THE Sustainability Impact Rankings 2026. The institution also ranks 155th globally and first among Pakistan’s private universities in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
The introduction of Punjab’s first PhD in Nursing underscores the University of Lahore’s vision of advancing healthcare education while strengthening Pakistan’s research capacity. The initiative is expected to produce highly skilled nursing professionals who can contribute to improved patient care, academic excellence, and the continued evolution of the country’s healthcare system.
