PTA Dispels Rumors of ATM Shutdowns Across Pakistan, Calls Reports Fake News

In response to the recent rumors circulating about the potential closure of ATMs across Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has firmly denied any such claims, calling them baseless and fake news. The PTA issued a statement on Saturday to clarify the situation, stating that there is no issue with Long Distance International (LDI) networks that would impact the availability of ATMs or the broader financial sector in the country.

The PTA’s statement comes on the heels of reports suggesting that a looming crisis in Pakistan’s telecom sector could lead to widespread disruptions, including the shutdown of ATMs. These reports, based on a document presented to Parliament, indicated that the potential non-renewal of LDI licenses could disrupt up to 50% of mobile traffic, take numerous mobile towers offline, and impact around 10% of internet traffic and 40% of ATM banking services.

However, the PTA has categorically dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the operations of LDI licensees have not been suspended or shut down, even for those whose licenses have expired. The regulatory body assured the public that the telecom infrastructure remains stable and operational, and there is no imminent threat to IT or financial services, including ATMs.

The confusion arose from concerns over the outstanding dues owed by LDI companies, amounting to Rs. 24 billion in Universal Service Fund charges, and additional late payment surcharges of Rs. 54 billion owed by telecom companies. These financial issues have led to delays in the renewal of LDI licenses, causing speculation about potential disruptions. However, the PTA has made it clear that it is actively managing the situation and that there will be no interruptions in service as a result of these financial disputes.

The PTA’s swift response aims to reassure the public and the financial sector that there is no cause for concern. The rumors of ATM closures, which had caused unnecessary panic among consumers, have been thoroughly debunked. The PTA’s statement underscores its commitment to maintaining a stable telecom and financial infrastructure, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted.

This incident highlights the importance of verifying information before it spreads, especially when it concerns critical infrastructure that affects millions of people. The PTA’s clarification should put to rest any fears of an impending telecom crisis or disruptions to financial services in Pakistan.
