Amid widespread speculation about internet disruptions in Pakistan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman, clarified misconceptions about submarine cable damage caused by sharks.
Myth Versus Reality
Rehman addressed a Senate committee, debunking the theory that sharks are responsible for damaging undersea internet cables. He explained that most damages result from natural wear, technical faults, or human activities such as anchoring. Shark-related incidents are negligible, he assured.
Technical Challenges
Pakistan recently faced significant internet slowdowns due to faults in the AAE-1 and SMW-4 submarine cables. The PTA chief highlighted that these disruptions occurred due to structural issues, not marine wildlife interference. Efforts to repair and stabilize these cables are underway.
Strengthening Connectivity
Rehman announced that the activation of the new “2 Africa” cable would bolster Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. This cable, one of the world’s largest subsea projects, is expected to enhance bandwidth and provide a more stable connection for the growing number of internet users.
The Need for Vigilance
The PTA is taking proactive steps to minimize future disruptions, including advocating for alternative cable routes and investments in advanced technologies. This approach aims to strengthen the resilience of Pakistan’s internet connectivity against unforeseen challenges.
