The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has approved and implemented a revised code of ethics applicable to all registered medical and dental practitioners (RMDPs) and recognized institutions across the country. The updated framework aims to strengthen professional standards while promoting inclusivity within the healthcare education system.
A key feature of the revised code is the introduction of a structured disability quota. Under the new policy, all recognized medical and dental institutions must allocate a minimum of 2 percent and a maximum of 5 percent seats for persons with disabilities. The measure is designed to ensure broader access to medical and dental education.
The council stated that the revised code applies uniformly to practitioners and institutions nationwide. By setting a defined quota range, PMDC seeks to create a balanced and transparent system that supports equal opportunities without compromising academic merit.
Officials noted that the updated guidelines are part of broader regulatory reforms aimed at improving governance, accountability, and ethical conduct within Pakistan’s healthcare sector. The revised code outlines professional responsibilities, institutional obligations, and compliance standards for medical and dental professionals.
The inclusion of a disability quota aligns with global trends emphasizing inclusive education and workplace diversity. Healthcare regulators worldwide are increasingly encouraging institutions to provide equitable access to training and professional development.
Medical and dental colleges will now be required to ensure that their admission policies and administrative procedures comply with the newly approved framework. Institutions may also need to enhance accessibility infrastructure and provide necessary academic support to facilitate effective participation of students admitted under the quota.
PMDC emphasized that adherence to the revised code of ethics will be mandatory. Non-compliance may result in regulatory action under applicable laws governing medical and dental education in Pakistan.
The updated framework reflects the council’s commitment to fostering professionalism while promoting social responsibility within the healthcare community. By combining ethical standards with inclusive policies, PMDC aims to strengthen public trust in the medical and dental professions.
