The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) faced a significant influx of complaints last month, receiving over 10,481 grievances during its open kacheris (public meetings) held across various locations. Despite the high volume, IESCO managed to resolve 10,449 of these issues, demonstrating its commitment to addressing consumer concerns.
The complaints were lodged at 126 sub-divisional officer (SDO) offices within IESCO’s jurisdiction, reflecting a broad range of issues related to electricity supply, billing, and other services. In response, IESCO has reiterated its call for the public to actively participate in these open forums to ensure their electricity-related problems are dealt with efficiently.
In an effort to gauge the effectiveness of these public forums, IESCO’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mohammad Naeem Jan, conducted surprise inspections at several SDO offices within the Islamabad Circle. His visits were aimed at assessing the progress of the open kacheris and ensuring that the complaints were being handled promptly and effectively.
In addition to addressing customer complaints, IESCO has been making strides in modernizing its infrastructure. Earlier this year, the company accelerated its digitization efforts by installing more than 30,000 Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters in various areas of Rawalpindi. This is part of a larger initiative aimed at enhancing the company’s overall service delivery and infrastructure.
Chief Engineer Operations Director of IESCO, Muhammad Aslam Khan, provided further details on the installation process, noting that these AMI meters were placed primarily at the domestic consumer level in areas such as Gulzar Quaid, Dr. Abdul Qadir Road, Gangal, and Khana. Additionally, AMI meters were installed at transformers in Korang Town and Westridge, marking the beginning of a comprehensive rollout across IESCO’s service areas.
The broader plan includes the installation of over 900,000 AMI meters by June 2026, with the initial focus on the Rawalpindi City Circle, Rawalpindi Cantonment Circle, and Taxila Division. To ensure the project’s timely completion, IESCO has engaged two contractors who are tasked with installing approximately 2,000 AMI meters daily within the targeted areas. This initiative is backed by financial support from the Asian Development Bank under the Second Power Distribution Enhancement Investment Program.
The introduction of AMI meters is expected to bring numerous benefits to IESCO’s operations, including more accurate billing, reduced electricity theft, and better management of electricity
