Google has introduced a new AI-driven feature aimed at enhancing the security of Android smartphones by locking out thieves from accessing users’ data. This innovative security measure is set to be rolled out across devices running Android 10 and later, offering users an added layer of protection against theft.
The new feature, which leverages artificial intelligence, is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to safeguard user data. According to a report by Forbes, the feature will soon be available to a broad range of Android users. Tech expert Mishaal Rahman, known for sharing updates on the latest developments in operating systems, announced the rollout of this anti-theft feature via his X account.
Rahman explained that the feature, named ‘theft detection lock,’ is initially being made available to a select group of users who signed up for the beta program in Brazil. The feature is designed to automatically lock the phone when it detects that it has been forcibly taken from the user.
“Theft detection lock is now rolling out for a limited number of users who signed up for the beta program in Brazil,” Rahman tweeted. He further elaborated that the feature relies on data from the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to identify common motions associated with theft, such as sudden jerks or rapid movements.

This AI-powered feature is expected to be a game-changer in smartphone security. By analyzing movement patterns, the system can distinguish between normal user activity and actions that indicate theft. If suspicious activity is detected, the phone will automatically lock itself, preventing unauthorized access.
Google plans to make this feature available to all Android 10 and later devices through an update via Google Play Services. The tech giant first hinted at this feature during its annual developer conference in May. Suzanne Frey, Google’s vice president of product, trust, and growth, emphasized the importance of securing devices in various stages of theft.
“To help keep your device and your data safe before, during, and after a theft attempt, we’re introducing a new suite of advanced theft protection features,” Frey stated during the conference.
The rollout of the theft detection lock represents a significant step forward in smartphone security, as it addresses a common concern among users: the protection of personal data in the event of device theft. With this feature, Google aims to provide users with peace of mind, knowing that their information remains secure even if their device is stolen.
This move also highlights Google’s commitment to integrating AI into its products to improve user experience and security. As the feature becomes more widely available, it is expected to reduce the incidence of data breaches resulting from smartphone theft, making Android devices more secure than ever before.
