ECC Greenlights Major Economic Initiatives

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, has approved key development measures aimed at boosting Pakistan’s economy, media sector, and global trade competitiveness.

One of the central decisions was to establish an industrial estate on the land of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM). The project, proposed by the Ministry of Industries and Production, is expected to spur industrial activity, attract domestic and foreign investment, and create significant employment opportunities.

Rs2.82 Billion Approved for PTV English News Channel

The ECC sanctioned Rs2.82 billion for Pakistan Television (PTV) Corporation to upgrade its English news channel. The modernisation plan will focus on enhancing technical capabilities, improving content quality, and strengthening digital presence to cater to international audiences.

The committee also directed PTV to develop a self-sufficiency strategy to ensure the channel becomes financially sustainable and reduces reliance on government funding over time.

Boost for Leather Industry Exports

In a move to enhance Pakistan’s competitiveness in the global leather market, the ECC abolished the requirement for a health quarantine certificate for the import and export of leather products. Industry experts believe this will simplify trade procedures, reduce costs, and support growth in one of Pakistan’s key export sectors.

Support for Climate Change Commitments

A technical supplementary grant was approved for the Ministry of Climate Change to facilitate Pakistan’s participation in the COP30 climate summit in Brazil. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to advancing its climate action agenda and engaging actively in global environmental discussions.

Implementation and Economic Impact

The ECC stressed the importance of timely execution of all approved initiatives to maximise their economic and social benefits. By investing in industrial infrastructure, media modernisation, export competitiveness, and climate diplomacy, the government aims to strengthen Pakistan’s economic resilience and global standing.

These measures are expected to have a multi-sector impact—generating jobs, improving international media outreach, boosting exports, and aligning Pakistan with global sustainability goals.
