The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced a landmark initiative to transform Islamabad into a “Free Wi-Fi City.” In the first stage, 30 public locations will be equipped with free internet access, offering citizens greater digital connectivity.

According to CDA officials, the initial rollout will prioritize metro bus stations, feeder bus stops, and popular public parks, ensuring that the service is immediately available at high-traffic locations.

Partnership with NTC

CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa confirmed that the project will be implemented in collaboration with the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC). While the CDA’s technical team will assist with infrastructure development, the operation and maintenance of the network will be fully managed by NTC.

Revenue Model for Sustainability

To ensure uninterrupted service, the CDA has also directed the creation of a marketing-based revenue model. Chairman Randhawa explained that income generated through advertising or related channels will be reinvested in repairs, upgrades, and expansions of the Wi-Fi system.

Digital Vision for Islamabad

The initiative reflects Islamabad’s growing ambition to become a digitally advanced capital city. “This project is part of our broader vision to make Islamabad a modern, smart, and fully connected city,” Randhawa stated, highlighting the government’s focus on digital accessibility for residents and visitors.

The plan to introduce free Wi-Fi aligns with global trends where metropolitan cities offer public internet services to improve access to information, support students, professionals, and travelers, and foster a stronger digital economy.
