The Punjab government has reportedly postponed its plan to restore the original historical names of roads and streets in Lahore after facing criticism from certain social and religious groups.
According to a report published by Dawn, the proposal was discussed during a meeting of the Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LAHR) in March. The meeting was jointly chaired by Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.
During the session, officials reportedly approved the restoration of several pre-Partition road and street names in Lahore and surrounding areas as part of broader efforts to preserve the city’s historical and cultural heritage.
The initiative was intended to highlight Lahore’s historical identity and revive names associated with the city’s past before the Partition of the subcontinent in 1947. Supporters of the proposal viewed the move as an effort to protect heritage sites and acknowledge the historical evolution of the provincial capital.
However, the proposal soon triggered criticism on social media and among some religious groups. According to the Dawn report, certain vloggers and activists objected to the restoration plan and linked the issue to religious sensitivities, which intensified public debate around the matter.
Following the criticism, the provincial administration reportedly decided to defer the proposal to avoid further controversy and potential backlash. Officials have not yet issued a formal timeline regarding whether the plan will be reconsidered in the future.
The development has sparked discussion among historians, heritage experts, and citizens who believe Lahore’s historical identity should be preserved through restoration projects and cultural initiatives. Others argue that changes involving public spaces and road names should be approached carefully to avoid misunderstandings or political controversy.
Lahore is widely regarded as one of South Asia’s oldest cultural centers, with many roads, buildings, and neighborhoods carrying historical significance from different eras, including the Mughal, Sikh, British colonial, and post-independence periods.
The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival initiative was introduced to focus on preserving historical architecture, improving urban heritage sites, and promoting cultural tourism in the city. The postponement of the road renaming proposal now highlights the challenges governments often face when balancing heritage preservation with public sentiment.
