In a major administrative move, the Government of Pakistan has removed the acting chairman of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority following mounting criticism over rising petrol prices and regulatory inefficiencies. The decision comes at a time when the country is already grappling with fuel supply challenges and public concern over pricing transparency.

According to reports, Nabeel Ahmed Awan, a senior BS-22 officer currently serving as secretary of the Establishment Division, has been assigned additional charge as OGRA chairman. His appointment is temporary and will remain in effect for three months or until a permanent replacement is named.

The outgoing acting chief, Shahzad Iqbal, will continue to serve in his existing role as Member Gas. The reshuffle reflects the government’s dissatisfaction with the authority’s handling of key issues, particularly its inability to effectively communicate and justify fuel price increases to the public.

The decision follows critical discussions during meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Oil Products Monitoring, where concerns were raised about delays in implementing essential reforms. These include automation within the petroleum sector, improved stock visibility, better supply chain integration, and more transparent pricing mechanisms.

Officials highlighted that the lack of progress in these areas has contributed to inefficiencies and confusion, especially during periods of fluctuating global oil prices. With fuel costs directly impacting inflation and economic stability, the government appears keen to enforce accountability within regulatory institutions.

This leadership change signals a renewed push toward improving governance in Pakistan’s energy sector. By prioritizing transparency and efficiency, authorities aim to restore public trust and ensure a more responsive approach to managing petroleum pricing and supply.

The coming months will be critical as the interim chairman takes charge and attempts to address longstanding structural challenges within OGRA. Observers will be closely watching whether this move leads to tangible improvements in how fuel prices are determined and communicated to citizens.
