X adds new feature to become ‘everything app’

X, the social media platform that recently had its name changed from Twitter, is taking a step toward being an all-encompassing “everything app” with the building of a new feature called “X Conference.” X Conference, currently in its testing phase internally, received updates over its video conferencing tool courtesy of X employee Chris Park.

X Conference will make X an ‘everything app’

X Conference, while still in its development phase, is the most basic type of multi-person video conferencing. While not as feature-rich as its older siblings like Zoom or Google Meet, it’s slated to receive a few upgrades, which include pinning speakers during a call and advanced notifications, among others, to further enhance the experience.

Still in its infancy, X Conference is getting lots of attention over claims that this new conference tool will become a strong competitor to Google Hangouts, AWS Chime, and Microsoft Teams. App researcher Nima Owji filled in more details by sharing a screenshot of planned features that included support for spatial audio and built-in captions.

But questions remain if X Conference can really carve a niche for itself in an already overcrowded market. With several well-settled players already dominating the video conferencing scene, it is yet not known whether X Conference will be released to the public or there is any more demand for another addition. The app falls in line with X’s big plan to evolve into a multimedia platform, hosting a variety of services other than social networking.

As X continues to invest in the development of service offerings, the future of X Conference remains uncertain, leaving at least one interesting question about the direction this platform will take and if it will meet user needs in a competitive environment.
