Google has taken a significant step towards addressing the persistent issue of SEO and AI-generated clickbait spam in its search results. Announcing changes to its spam policy, the company aims to combat algorithmically generated spam effectively. Lily Ray, senior director of SEO at Amsive, views these alterations as potentially one of the most significant updates in Google’s history. The policy adjustments target a reduction of up to 40% in “low-quality, unoriginal content” on Google search results.

Lily Ray, senior director of SEO at the marketing agency Amsive says: “It sounds like it’s going to be one of the biggest updates in the history of Google. It could change everything.”

Google’s focus lies in countering “scaled content abuse,” where malicious entities inundate the internet with articles and blog posts to exploit search engine algorithms. Pandu Nayak, Google’s vice president of search, cited obituary spam as a notable example of such abuse, involving the scraping and reposting of death notices on platforms like YouTube, exacerbated by generative AI.

These revamped spam policies aim to effectively tackle the issue, with Google hoping to mitigate the spread of obituary spam and similar malicious content types. The proliferation of generative AI has facilitated spammers in creating and disseminating such content, underscoring the importance of Google’s proactive measures in maintaining the integrity of search results.

The implementation of these changes could significantly enhance the quality of Google search results, signaling Google’s dedication to combating spam and ensuring a better user experience. Both online users and businesses are eagerly anticipating the impact of these policy adjustments on search rankings and content visibility, recognizing the potential for a more reliable and informative search experience.
