On October 13, 2024, Pakistan Railways announced that over 97 officials have been penalized for corruption over the last five years. This crackdown is part of a broader effort by the department to address malpractices that have plagued the organization. Key measures have been implemented, such as introducing ticket vending machines and online ticket reservations to minimize black market sales and improve transparency in the system.
To curb further irregularities, the department has established dedicated teams to monitor the attendance of staff and carry out daily “ticketless” campaigns. Special Ticket Examiners (STEs) are deployed across divisions to identify and penalize passengers traveling without tickets. This initiative is aimed at boosting revenue collection and ensuring that operational integrity is maintained. Moreover, the implementation of online banking for pension payments is helping eliminate ghost pensioners, reducing financial fraud within the organization.
In addition to these steps, Pakistan Railways is holding monthly Khuli Kacheris and E-Kacheris to resolve public and staff grievances. The system has also been bolstered by vigilance offices set up to handle corruption complaints and ensure swift action is taken. Regular performance reviews and disciplinary meetings help track the progress of anti-corruption initiatives, demonstrating the department’s commitment to maintaining accountability across all levels
