OpenAI introduces text-to-video AI video tool Sora

OpenAI has introduced its AI video tool Sora, a revolutionary video-generating tool that is aimed at upending content creation. The platform, much like DALL-E, allows users to input a scene description in text format and receive high-definition video segments in response. The tool extends videos, fills in missing frames, or creates clips out of still images, fitting into most of the AI realms.

Sora is now available in the U.S. and most international markets, though OpenAI confirmed there’s no launch date for Europe, the U.K., and certain other regions yet. The rollout represents a significant milestone for OpenAI, which came into the global limelight last year because of ChatGPT. Subscribers to the ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans can get access to the OpenAI AI’s Sora at no additional cost.

Safety has been a major focus during Sora’s development, including the work of “red-teamers” who test the model for various vulnerabilities, such as bias and misinformation. During a recent live stream, Altman showcased features like “Blend,” which seamlessly stitches scenes together, and options to loop AI-generated videos.

OpenAI’s Sora enters a competitive market alongside Meta’s Lumiere, Google’s AI video tools, and Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion. While the technology excites content creators, concerns about misinformation remain prevalent. Recent data from Clarity indicates a 900% increase in AI-generated deepfakes over the past year, raising alarms ahead of global elections.

Protests have also surfaced. Some early-access program artists for OpenAI accused the company of exploiting their labor under a collaboration guise. In response, OpenAI assured continued support through grants, events, and other programs.

With OpenAI AI video tool Sora, the company moves closer to its goal of multimodality, stitching together text, images, and videos into a cohesive AI suite. As OpenAI continues to fight for dominance in the generative AI sector against tech giants like Meta, Amazon, and Google, tools like Sora could be the next frontier in AI-driven creativity.
