Elon Musk revealed on Monday that a significant cyber attack had disrupted his highly anticipated interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump on his social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter. The disruption is seen as a major setback for both Musk and Trump, as the interview was intended to boost Trump’s political campaign, which has struggled since President Joe Biden exited the presidential race.
“There appears to be a massive DDOS attack on X. Working on shutting it down,” Musk tweeted, acknowledging the platform’s technical difficulties just as the interview was about to go live. A Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack overwhelms a network with excessive traffic, causing significant slowdowns or complete shutdowns.
Musk, who has previously aligned himself with the Democratic Party, has shown increasing support for Trump, particularly after an assassination attempt on the former president at a rally last month. His support has included reinstating Trump’s account on X, which had been banned following the January 2021 U.S. Capitol riot.
The planned interview between the two was intended as a pivotal moment to reinvigorate Trump’s campaign. However, the cyber attack’s timing led to the event’s cancellation, marking a significant disappointment for both Musk and Trump.
Musk tried to reassure users by explaining that the system had been tested earlier in the day with 8 million concurrent listeners without issue. Despite the setback, Musk pledged to conduct the interview with a limited number of listeners and later post the unedited audio for the public.
This incident not only disrupted a major political event but also highlighted potential vulnerabilities in the platform’s infrastructure, raising concerns about the security and reliability of X during high-profile events. The failure of the interview to proceed as planned could have broader implications for both Musk’s platform and Trump’s ongoing campaign efforts.
