Mehmood Akhtar Speaks Out Against Western Influence in Pakistani Dramas

The Illustrious Career of Mehmood Akhtar

Mehmood Akhtar stands as one of Pakistan’s most respected television actors, having delivered memorable performances in classic PTV dramas like Tum Kon Piya, Mere Mehban, Gul-e-Rana, and Be Zuban. His work in Hawaain, Aasmano Pe Likha, and Kashkol further established him as a versatile performer. Though currently residing in Canada, Akhtar maintains strong connections with Pakistan and frequently visits Karachi.

A Stark Warning on National Television

During a recent appearance on Samaa TV‘s Gup Shab with host Vasay Chaudhary, Akhtar issued a sobering critique of contemporary Pakistani dramas. The veteran actor expressed deep concern about what he perceives as the destructive influence of Western funding and agendas on the country’s entertainment industry.

The Decline of Quality Storytelling

Akhtar contrasted today’s dramas with the golden era of PTV, when stories were deeply rooted in Pakistani culture and values. “We had well-written stories that reflected our society,” he recalled. The actor identified the introduction of digest magazines as the first blow to quality storytelling, followed by what he calls the current “big scam” – Western-funded productions pushing specific narratives.

The Problem With Foreign Funding

“The West is sending money to produce particular types of stories,” Akhtar revealed. “Agenda-based scripts are being written, and no one is questioning it.” He warned that this trend is not just affecting entertainment but could fundamentally alter Pakistani society by promoting values and narratives that don’t align with local traditions.

A Call for Industry Accountability

Despite his warnings, Akhtar noted that both producers and audiences seem content with the current state of affairs. “Drama makers and viewers are happy with it,” he said, while questioning what kind of society this will create for future generations. His comments have sparked renewed debate about cultural preservation in Pakistani media.
