Indonesia is set to enhance its tourism appeal by extending visa-free entry to citizens from 20 additional countries. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy announced this significant development, which is aimed at boosting tourist arrivals and stimulating economic growth. The new policy will come into effect from October this year.
Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno shared insights into the selection process, emphasizing the focus on countries that promise substantial economic benefits. “The selection process is nearly complete, and the list of 20 destinations has been submitted. We are advocating for visa-free entry for tourists from countries that provide the greatest economic impact,” he explained.
The comprehensive list, compiled last December, includes prominent tourism markets such as Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, the UK, and the US. These countries were chosen based on their potential to significantly boost Indonesia’s tourism sector.
This move is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the tourism industry, which suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The relaxation of social distancing protocols and travel restrictions has prompted many countries, including Indonesia, to make it easier for tourists to enter, thereby driving economic recovery.
In 2023, Indonesia welcomed around 11.7 million tourists, a figure that lags behind other Southeast Asian destinations. However, the government is optimistic about increasing these numbers. The first quarter of 2024 saw approximately three million foreign visitors, and the target for the entire year is an ambitious 17 million.
Minister Uno highlighted the economic advantages of increased tourism, noting its role in generating revenue, creating jobs, and stimulating local businesses. “Tourism is a vital component of our economy. By opening our doors to more international visitors, we are investing in sustainable growth,” he said.
The visa-free entry program is also a strategic response to global trends. As countries worldwide ease entry requirements to attract tourists in the post-pandemic era, Indonesia aims to establish itself as a premier travel destination in Southeast Asia by simplifying its visa policies.
