Apple Unveils iPhone 16e, Quietly Discontinues Three Models

Apple has officially launched the iPhone 16e, its latest budget-friendly smartphone, but the reveal comes with a surprising twist—three familiar models have been quietly removed from the Apple Store.

Apple iPhone 16e Takes Center Stage

Priced at £599/$599, the iPhone 16e marks a shift in Apple’s lineup, featuring the latest Apple Intelligence capabilities, ChatGPT-powered Siri integration, a 6.1-inch display, a two-in-one camera system, and an impressive battery life. However, the return of the “notch” design has sparked debate among users.

While excitement builds around the new release, Apple has subtly phased out three existing models: the iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus. Although Apple has not formally announced their discontinuation, these devices have vanished from the official store, now listed as “available at authorized resellers.”

Why the Sudden Discontinuation?

The iPhone 14 series, released less than three years ago, was among Apple’s best-selling models. However, the new iPhone 16e directly replaces the iPhone 14 at the same starting price, making its removal inevitable. Apple has historically avoided offering two devices at identical price points, suggesting a strategic realignment of its product range.

Another key factor is Apple’s transition to USB-C charging. The discontinued iPhone 14, 14 Plus, and SE 3 all relied on the older Lightning port, which Apple began phasing out in 2023 due to EU regulations pushing for a universal charging standard.

Mixed Reactions from Fans

Apple enthusiasts took to social media to express their surprise and frustration. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Wow, the 14s already?!!?” while another questioned, “WHY SO FAST???” Some even speculated that Apple had rebranded the iPhone 14 with minor changes to create the iPhone 16e at a lower price.

Despite the controversy, Apple remains confident in its latest release. “iPhone 16e packs in the features our users love while making the iPhone experience more accessible,” said Kaiann Drance, VP of worldwide iPhone product marketing.

As the iPhone 16e makes its way into the hands of consumers, Apple’s strategy is clear—streamline the lineup, embrace AI-driven features, and ensure every new device aligns with its evolving ecosystem.
