Amidst growing concerns over the disappearance of social media platform X in Pakistan, Anwar ul Haq Kakar, the interim Prime Minister, in an exclusive interview with Urdu News, addressed the issue. Despite widespread speculation, the Prime Minister clarified that, from their perspective, X is not officially restricted in Pakistan. Assuring swift action, the Prime Minister pledged to resolve any technical hurdles pertaining to X upon the new government’s assumption of power.
The abrupt cessation of X’s services in Pakistan on February 17 left users perplexed, with no official explanation from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) or government officials. Internet monitor Netblocks corroborated ongoing restrictions on X in Pakistan since February 17, albeit with sporadic accessibility.
In a significant development, the Sindh High Court (SHC) intervened, instructing PTA to fully restore X’s services nationwide. However, despite the court’s directive, the platform remains inaccessible in Pakistan.
Curiously, despite the ban, numerous ministers in the caretaker setup and official government departments’ accounts continue to post on X, potentially leveraging VPN services to circumvent restrictions.
