Pakistan’s stock market came under renewed selling pressure on Monday as political uncertainty weighed on investor sentiment and pushed the benchmark KSE-100 Index sharply lower.

The KSE-100 Index ended the session at 165,867 points, losing 2,288 points, or 1.36 percent, during the trading session.

The benchmark had faced significant pressure during the day, falling to an intraday low of 2,391 points before recovering some of its losses toward the close.

The decline came amid heightened political uncertainty following unsuccessful government-opposition negotiations over a planned opposition march. The talks had been aimed at easing tensions, but the two sides remained divided over several issues.

The political developments added to concerns among investors about the possible impact of renewed protests and disruption on economic activity. Market participants often monitor political stability closely because uncertainty can influence investment decisions and overall market confidence.

Government and opposition representatives had held negotiations ahead of the planned October 4 march. However, the second round of discussions ended without a breakthrough, with disagreements remaining over issues including access to jailed PTI founder Imran Khan and other political and security-related matters.

Following the lack of an agreement, opposition representatives indicated that the planned march remained in place. This further increased uncertainty surrounding the political environment as investors assessed the potential economic implications.

The stock market’s reaction reflects the sensitivity of equities to developments beyond corporate earnings and economic indicators. Political uncertainty can lead investors to adopt a more cautious approach, particularly when there are concerns about possible disruptions or changes in the economic environment.

The KSE-100 has previously experienced periods of significant volatility when political and geopolitical developments increased uncertainty. Official market reviews have also documented sharp movements in the index during periods of heightened domestic and external risks.

For investors, the latest decline places renewed attention on the direction of the market in the coming sessions. Any developments related to political negotiations, protests or broader economic conditions could influence market sentiment.

The government and opposition have previously emphasized negotiations as a means of addressing political differences. Recent talks were held with the stated aim of finding a way forward, but no consensus was reached on key matters during the latest round.

The market will now remain focused on political developments alongside economic indicators, corporate results and other factors affecting investor confidence.

Monday’s session ultimately left the KSE-100 at 165,867 points, marking a decline of 2,288 points as investors responded to renewed uncertainty surrounding the country’s political situation.
