WhatsApp to Introduce Built-in Document Scanner for Android: CamScanner May Soon Be Obsolete

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a powerful new feature for Android users that could eliminate the need for third-party apps like CamScanner. According to version 2.25.18.29 of the WhatsApp beta, currently available through the Google Play Beta Program, the app will soon support native document scanning capabilities.

The scanner was initially launched for iOS users earlier this year and is now being adapted for Android. Once integrated, users will be able to scan documents directly from the WhatsApp file-sharing interface, using their device’s camera without needing to switch between apps.

The scanning tool introduces two modes for capturing documents. Manual mode lets users control exactly when a photo is taken, offering greater precision for alignment. Automatic mode detects the document’s edges and snaps the photo at the optimal moment—making it ideal for quick scans.

What sets this feature apart is its seamless integration. Once a document is scanned, WhatsApp automatically converts it into a PDF format. This file can then be shared in chats or groups as a regular message. All scanning and conversion processes occur directly on the user’s device, utilizing native Android APIs. As always, WhatsApp assures users that all files remain protected by its industry-standard end-to-end encryption.

Though still under development, this feature is a major quality-of-life improvement for professionals, students, and remote workers who frequently exchange documents online.

This update is not yet live for the general public, and WhatsApp has not confirmed an official release date. However, the presence of the scanner in the latest beta strongly suggests a public rollout in the near future.
