Trump Signals Likely Extension of TikTok Deadline

Trump Signals Likely Extension of TikTok Deadline, Considers 50-50 Ownership Deal

In a move that could once again delay the controversial ban of TikTok in the U.S., President Donald Trump has signalled his intent to extend the TikTok deadline for a second time. Speaking aboard Air Force One on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that a further delay is likely as ByteDance, the China-based owner of the app, navigates divestment of its U.S. operations.

TikTok Deadline Extension Subjected to China’s Approval

“I think we’ll get it,” Trump said when asked if he expects approval from China. “Probably have to get China approval, but I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.” This marks a significant shift from his earlier stance during his first term, when he aggressively pursued a full ban on the app, citing national security concerns.

The latest development follows Trump’s executive order, which granted TikTok a 75-day reprieve, effectively pausing enforcement of a law passed under the Biden administration that required a sale or ban of the platform. The TikTok deadline, initially set for June 19, has become a political and diplomatic flashpoint, with Trump now suggesting that the app may not be sold at all.
