Persistent monsoon rains in Islamabad have caused the water level at Rawal Dam to reach its maximum capacity, prompting authorities to open the dam’s spillways as a precautionary measure to manage the increasing inflow.
According to the district administration, the water level at Rawal Dam climbed to 1,748.30 feet following continuous heavy rainfall in the federal capital and surrounding areas. In response, officials opened the spillways at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday to safely release excess water and reduce pressure on the reservoir.
The decision was taken to maintain the structural safety of the dam and minimize the risk of flooding in downstream areas. Opening spillways is a standard operational procedure whenever water levels approach the dam’s maximum storage capacity during the monsoon season.
The district administration has placed all relevant departments on high alert to ensure a swift response to any emergency arising from the increased water discharge. Rescue teams, local authorities, and disaster management officials have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and remain prepared for any unforeseen developments.
Residents living near streams, nullahs, and low-lying areas have been urged to exercise caution. Authorities have advised the public to stay away from waterways, drainage channels, and flood-prone locations, where water levels may rise rapidly following the controlled release from the dam.
