Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday held his first official meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, emphasizing the importance of strong coordination between the federal and provincial governments to ensure peace, stability, and development in the province.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad and began with a one-on-one interaction between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. This was followed by a delegation-level session where key matters concerning the federation and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were discussed in detail.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and KP Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam were also present during the talks, reflecting the significance of the issues under discussion.
According to an official communiqué, the meeting focused on governance, security, and development challenges faced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The prime minister highlighted that harmony between the federation and the province is essential for sustainable progress and described KP as a vital unit of the federation. He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the province’s peace and prosperity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed that close cooperation between federal and provincial authorities is indispensable for maintaining law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said coordinated efforts are necessary to address security challenges and ensure lasting stability in the region.
He urged the provincial government to further strengthen institutions to counter terrorism more effectively. The prime minister reiterated that both the federal and provincial governments would continue joint efforts to eliminate terrorism and safeguard the country.
The prime minister also emphasized that maintaining peace, ensuring public welfare, and upholding law and order are constitutional responsibilities of the provincial government. He noted that the KP administration is fully empowered to take concrete steps in this regard.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif underlined the need to improve health, education, and public welfare services in the province. He assured continued federal cooperation to enhance service delivery and improve the quality of life for the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He further pledged federal support for development projects and infrastructure improvement, in line with constitutional provisions. The prime minister said the federal government’s vision is to take all provinces together and ensure balanced and uniform development across the country.
Calling for unity and consultation, Prime Minister Sharif stated that national stability and prosperity can only be achieved through mutual understanding and effective communication between the federation and the provinces.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said provincial concerns were openly discussed. He revealed that Rs26 billion has already been invested in development projects in the former FATA regions, highlighting the scale of financial commitments for the merged districts.
The meeting also included condemnation of a recent Balochistan incident, with Afridi stating that terrorism has no religion, province, or country. He emphasized national unity and recognition of sacrifices made in the fight against terrorism.
Afridi confirmed that the prime minister directed further meetings to resolve outstanding issues and that the planning minister has been tasked with initiating discussions immediately. KP Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam described the outcome as positive, saying progress had been made.
Clarifying speculation, Chief Minister Afridi stated that no political matters or negotiations were discussed, and there was no mention of talks with the founder of PTI. He stressed that the meeting focused solely on governance and provincial issues.
