100 MW Solar Project for Gilgit-Baltistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the immediate implementation of a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to ensure sustainable and affordable electricity. The project consists of an 18-megawatt rooftop solar program and an 82-megawatt utility-scale solar initiative, expected to be completed by 2027. This initiative is projected to save the government Rs 1 billion annually while providing clean, uninterrupted power to the region.

Power Supply Boost for Gwadar Port City

During a high-level meeting, PM Shehbaz directed authorities to resolve electricity issues in Gwadar, emphasizing the need for uninterrupted and reliable power to support economic growth. The Ministry of Energy reported a 42% reduction in power disruptions and outlined plans to stabilize voltage within six months. Short-term measures include installing 9.7 MW of solar capacity in key government institutions, while long-term plans feature a 40 MW solar project to meet growing demand.

Economic and Industrial Growth Priorities

The Prime Minister stressed that Gwadar Port must meet international power standards to attract investment and boost economic activity. He highlighted that improved electricity supply would position Gwadar as a global trade hub. Similarly, in Gilgit-Baltistan, the government aims to promote industrial expansion and economic development through reliable energy infrastructure.

Government’s Commitment to Energy Solutions

PM Shehbaz praised the Ministry of Energy and Ahsan Iqbal-led committee for their recommendations and urged swift execution of immediate, short-term, and long-term projects. Officials confirmed that the GB government would facilitate land allocation and infrastructure support for seamless project implementation.
