In a significant enhancement to user experience, WhatsApp has introduced a voice message transcription feature, allowing users to convert audio messages into text. This update is particularly beneficial in scenarios where listening to voice messages is inconvenient, such as in noisy environments or during meetings.
Activating Voice Message Transcription
To utilize this feature, ensure your WhatsApp application is updated to the latest version. Navigate to Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts, and toggle the feature on. Once activated, long-press on any voice message within a chat and select the ‘Transcribe’ option to view its text version. This functionality is currently rolling out globally and is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
Language Support and Customization
At launch, the transcription feature supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. WhatsApp plans to expand this list in future updates. Users can select their preferred transcription language within the app settings. Additionally, WhatsApp is developing options to customize how transcriptions are generated, allowing users to choose between automatic transcriptions for all voice messages, manual transcriptions for selected messages, or disabling the feature entirely.
Privacy and Security
Maintaining user privacy is paramount. All transcriptions are processed locally on the user’s device, ensuring that voice messages remain protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. This means that neither WhatsApp nor any third party can access the content of your voice messages or their transcriptions.

This transcription feature offers greater flexibility in communication, catering to users who prefer reading over listening.
