Newly leaked third-party cases for the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup appear to confirm changes to Apple’s MagSafe system, fueling speculation about hardware adjustments ahead of the phone’s September launch. The image, shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo, reportedly shows cases for the entire range, including the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
MagSafe placement appears lower on all models
The cases suggest that Apple has repositioned the MagSafe magnets slightly lower on the back of all iPhone 17 models. Analysts believe the shift is necessary to accommodate the phones’ larger camera modules. While the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air retain the traditional circular MagSafe ring, the leaked iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max cases reveal a notable difference: a break at the bottom of the circle.
Why is the Pro design different?
It remains unclear why Apple would adopt a new MagSafe arrangement for its Pro models. Previous reports indicated that Apple considered reducing the size of the MagSafe ring to use fewer magnets, but that change never materialized. A major redesign could risk compatibility issues with existing MagSafe chargers.
Some industry insiders speculate that the modified design may be related to rumored vapor chamber cooling technology exclusive to the Pro models. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup during its usual September event, with launch week predicted to begin September 8, 2025.
Until the official announcement, the leaked cases remain unverified, but they align closely with earlier rumors about Apple’s MagSafe adjustments.
