Strengthening Bilateral Relations between Pakistan and Jordan

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein on Monday during his official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The high-level meeting marked an important step in enhancing defence and security cooperation between the two nations. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the visit underscored Pakistan’s commitment to expanding bilateral ties and strategic collaboration with Jordan.

The meeting was also attended by Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, reflecting the significance Jordan places on its relationship with Pakistan. Discussions focused on mutual areas of interest, including regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and future defence partnerships.

King Abdullah II Praises Pakistan Armed Forces

During the meeting, King Abdullah II, who serves as the supreme commander of the Jordan Armed Forces, praised the professionalism and dedication of Pakistan’s military. He commended the Pakistan Armed Forces for their role in maintaining peace and security in the region and for their contribution to global stability. The King expressed a strong desire to further enhance cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces through joint training programs, intelligence sharing, and defence production initiatives.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to deepen its strategic and military collaboration with Jordan. He highlighted the historic bond between the two countries and appreciated Jordan’s support in regional and international forums. The ISPR statement noted that both sides agreed to continue exploring avenues for closer engagement in defence technology and counterterrorism operations.

Meeting with Jordan’s Military Leadership

Before meeting King Abdullah II, Field Marshal Munir called on Major General Yousef Ahmed Al-Huneiti, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Jordan Armed Forces. Upon his arrival at the General Headquarters, the COAS was received with a warm welcome and presented with a Guard of Honour — a gesture symbolizing respect and solidarity between the two militaries.

During their discussions, both leaders acknowledged the “deep-rooted and historic ties” shared between Pakistan and Jordan. Major General Al-Huneiti lauded the Pakistan Armed Forces for their professionalism and their consistent efforts toward promoting peace and regional security. The meeting also emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional linkages and holding regular high-level exchanges between the defence establishments of both countries.

Context of the Visit and Regional Implications

Field Marshal Munir’s visit to Jordan comes just over a month after Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a landmark Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement on September 17. Under this agreement, both nations committed to treating any act of aggression against one as an act of aggression against both. The pact has opened the door for greater defence cooperation among Muslim countries.

Following the Saudi-Pakistan agreement, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar revealed that several Arab and Muslim nations have expressed interest in signing similar pacts with Islamabad. Field Marshal Munir’s recent engagement with Jordan is seen as part of this broader diplomatic initiative to strengthen Pakistan’s defence ties across the Middle East and promote collective regional stability.
