On April 30, 2025, China’s Shenzhou-19 crew capsule successfully touched down in Inner Mongolia, marking the conclusion of a six-month mission aboard the Tiangong space station. The crew’s safe return underscores China’s growing capabilities in human spaceflight and its commitment to advancing space science.
Mission Overview
Launched on October 29, 2024, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, Shenzhou-19 carried three astronauts: Commander Cai Xuzhe, and crew members Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze. Upon arrival at the Tiangong space station on October 30, the crew took over operations from the departing Shenzhou-18 team. Their mission involved conducting scientific experiments, performing extravehicular activities (EVAs), and maintaining the station’s infrastructure .
Scientific Endeavors and Extravehicular Activities
During their tenure, the Shenzhou-19 astronauts completed several significant scientific experiments, including studies on human brain organoids and material exposure tests in space’s harsh environment. They also engaged in two EVAs, with the first, on December 17, 2024, lasting a record-breaking 9 hours and 6 minutes. This achievement surpassed the previous record for the longest spacewalk, set by NASA astronauts in 2001 .
Life Aboard Tiangong
Life aboard the Tiangong space station was both challenging and rewarding for the astronauts. They maintained a rigorous schedule of scientific research and maintenance tasks. In their downtime, they engaged in activities such as growing vegetables in the station’s “space garden,” exercising to counteract the effects of microgravity, and communicating with their families. Wang Haoze, China’s first female spaceflight engineer, expressed pride in their accomplishments and the opportunity to witness Earth from space .
Return and Landing
The crew’s return was initially scheduled for April 29, 2025, but was delayed by one day due to high winds at the planned landing site. They landed safely on April 30 in a new location on the eastern side of the Dongfeng landing area in Inner Mongolia.
