Karachi Faces Water Shortage During Dhabeji Grid Station Maintenance

100 Million Gallon Water Deficit Expected During 12-Hour Maintenance

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) announced that the city will experience a water shortage of approximately 100 million gallons today due to annual maintenance work at the Dhabeji Grid Station. The maintenance, scheduled from 8 am to 8 pm, will lead to partial power suspension on multiple feeders supplying the pumping station.

A KWSC spokesperson stated that Karachi normally receives 650 million gallons of water daily, but the disruption will significantly impact supply. Areas expected to be affected include Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal, DHA, Chanesar Town, Jinnah Town, North Nazimabad, and Gulberg Town.

Extended Power Outages Worsen Karachi’s Water Crisis

This latest disruption follows reports of severe water shortages in Karachi due to prolonged electricity outages at major pumping stations. According to the KWSC, power cuts by K-Electric (KE) have already caused a shortfall of 884 million gallons in the first 23 days of November.

The Dhabeji Pumping Station, a critical water supply facility, suffered the most, with 132 hours and 20 minutes of power outages, resulting in a deficit of 424 million gallons. Other affected stations include:

  • Dumlottee Pumping Station: 146 hours without power, 111 million gallon shortage
  • North East Karachi Station: 335 million gallon deficit
  • Hub and Pipri Stations: 6 million gallons shortfall each
  • Gharo Station: 2 million gallon reduction

Residents Urged to Conserve Water Amid Supply Disruptions

The KWSC has warned residents to conserve water as supply disruptions are expected to continue. The repeated power failures have severely hampered pumping operations, exacerbating Karachi’s chronic water scarcity issues. Authorities are working to minimize the impact, but the situation remains challenging due to infrastructure constraints and inconsistent electricity supply.
