Consumer Court Issues Notice for Misleading Advertisement
Bollywood actor Salman Khan has found himself embroiled in yet another legal controversy after receiving a notice from the Kota Consumer Court for allegedly promoting a pan masala brand. The complaint was filed by Inder Mohan Singh Huni, a senior BJP leader and practicing lawyer at the Rajasthan High Court, who accused the celebrity and the company of deceptive marketing practices.
False Claims About Product Ingredients Alleged
The legal action centers around advertisements for Rajshree Pan Masala that claim the product contains “saffron-blended cardamom” and “saffron-flavored pan masala.” Huni argued these representations are misleading, stating that genuine saffron’s exorbitant market price—approximately ₹4 lakh per kilogram—makes its inclusion in a ₹5 product impossible. The petition contends such claims deliberately deceive consumers about the product’s actual composition.
Concerns Over Youth Influence and Health Risks
The complaint highlights broader concerns about celebrity endorsements of potentially harmful products. Huni emphasized that Salman Khan, as a influential public figure, bears responsibility for the social impact of his promotions. “In many countries, celebrities avoid endorsing even soft drinks, but here film stars are promoting harmful products like tobacco and pan masala,” he told media representatives. Medical research has consistently linked pan masala consumption to increased risks of oral cancer and other health complications.
Upcoming Court Proceedings and Potential Implications
The Kota Consumer Court has formally summoned Salman Khan to respond to the allegations, with the next hearing scheduled for November 27. This case follows growing scrutiny of celebrity endorsements in India, particularly for products with known health risks. Legal experts suggest the outcome could set important precedents regarding celebrity accountability in advertising and the regulation of pan masala marketing claims.
