Twitch CEO Reveals Why GTA 6 Won’t Hurt Grand Theft Auto 5 Popularity

In a recent statement that stirred conversations across the gaming community, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy addressed concerns about whether the much-anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) would diminish the popularity of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5). Contrary to the widespread assumption that GTA 6 will completely overshadow the older title, Clancy expressed strong confidence that GTA 5 will continue to thrive, especially within the Twitch streaming ecosystem.

According to Clancy, the enduring appeal of GTA 5—particularly its online component, GTA Online—has created a loyal and expansive player base that won’t disappear overnight with the launch of a new title. He emphasized that the dynamic nature of content creation, especially on platforms like Twitch, ensures that older games continue to enjoy popularity even years after their release.

A Decade of Dominance

Released in 2013, GTA 5 has enjoyed an unprecedented lifespan in the video game world. It has consistently ranked among the top-selling and most-watched games for over a decade. Its massive success is attributed not only to the gripping single-player story mode but also to the continually evolving multiplayer platform, GTA Online, which has introduced countless new missions, events, vehicles, and community-driven experiences over the years.

The Role of Streaming Culture

Clancy pointed out that this longevity has created an ecosystem that is both self-sustaining and rich with creativity. Streamers on Twitch have developed massive followings by roleplaying in GTA 5 servers, hosting online tournaments, and producing modded gameplay content. “The community has built something special around GTA 5, and those communities don’t just vanish because of a new release,” he noted.

One of the key reasons Clancy believes GTA 5 will maintain its relevance post-GTA 6 is the influence of streaming culture. Platforms like Twitch have redefined how games are experienced—not just as entertainment but as social engagement. GTA 5 has proven particularly well-suited to this evolution.

GTA roleplay servers, in particular, have created an entirely new genre of content where streamers perform as characters in a virtual city with rules, jobs, and interpersonal drama. This form of entertainment is difficult to replicate in newly launched games and may take time to develop in GTA 6.

“Twitch isn’t just about playing the newest game,” Clancy explained. “It’s about the relationship between the streamer, their community, and the stories they tell. GTA 5 has become a storytelling platform.”

Uncertain Transition to GTA 6

Another factor that may preserve GTA 5’s dominance is the uncertainty surrounding GTA 6’s online mode. Rockstar Games has been tight-lipped about whether GTA 6 will launch with an equivalent to GTA Online or if that component will arrive later. If a multiplayer mode isn’t available immediately, many players and content creators may stick with GTA 5 until they are certain GTA 6’s ecosystem is ready to support their style of play.

Furthermore, Clancy mentioned that transitions in the gaming industry don’t happen instantaneously. “GTA 5 didn’t just explode on Day 1—it grew. GTA 6 will likely follow a similar path. It will be massive, yes, but it won’t erase what came before.”

Content Diversity and Player Choice

Clancy also emphasized that the diversity of content in GTA 5 offers players different experiences that won’t necessarily be replicated in GTA 6, at least not immediately. Players invested in specific communities, mods, or roleplay setups may not feel compelled to switch over right away.

“Games today are more than just titles—they’re platforms. And GTA 5 is one of the most successful platforms we’ve ever seen,” Clancy said. “Its popularity is not just about Rockstar’s updates, but about what the community has done with the tools they’ve been given.”

Looking Ahead

While GTA 6 will undoubtedly set new benchmarks for open-world gaming, the continued enthusiasm around GTA 5 signals a coexistence rather than a replacement. Clancy’s insights suggest that the future of Grand Theft Auto lies not in one title eclipsing another, but in both thriving side by side in the ever-expanding world of gaming and streaming.
