Pakistan to Block Unregistered VPNs for Enhanced Cybersecurity and Control

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a new measure to block unregistered Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) across the country. This decision follows a Senate committee’s concerns about rising security risks and the unmonitored use of VPNs to access restricted platforms and content.

The PTA Chairman explained that the measure is part of a broader strategy to regulate online activities, protect against cyber threats, and curb access to banned social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).

Since restrictions on certain social platforms were enforced earlier this year, VPN usage in Pakistan surged significantly, with platforms like Surfshark reporting a 300-400% increase in new users from Pakistan. Businesses relying on VPNs for operations, such as software firms, call centers, and freelancers, have raised concerns about disruptions.

The PTA has thus introduced a “one-window” registration system to facilitate secure, uninterrupted VPN access for approved users. This policy balances national security interests with the needs of the digital economy, and further details are expected to clarify compliance requirements for businesses and individuals.
