Pakistan Railways is taking significant steps to modernize its operations with the procurement of 230 passenger coaches and 820 high-capacity wagons. This initiative, part of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), aims to enhance the speed and efficiency of train services across the country, ensuring more punctual and reliable journeys for passengers.
Key Details of the Procurement
According to an official from the Ministry of Railways, the first batch of 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) passenger coaches has already been acquired. The remaining 184 coaches will be manufactured locally, which aligns with Pakistan Railways’ objective to bolster domestic production capabilities. These new coaches will be capable of operating at speeds of up to 160 km/h, significantly improving the travel experience and reducing travel times across the network.
Infrastructure and Speed Improvements
In addition to the procurement of new coaches and wagons, Pakistan Railways is focusing on the rehabilitation and upgrading of its existing infrastructure. The modernization efforts include improving the railway track and signaling systems along the Main Line-I (ML-I) from Karachi to Peshawar. The ML-I, which spans 1,726 kilometers, is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative. This upgrade will enable trains to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, a marked improvement from the current speeds.
The track-doubling project from Lahore to Peshawar, covering 462.20 kilometers, is also part of the broader strategy to enhance the railway network. The improved infrastructure, including the installation of a Computer-Based Interlocking (CBI) system at 48 stations along the ML-I, will not only increase train speeds but also enhance the safety and reliability of operations.
Rolling Stock and Freight Operations
The new rolling stock, including passenger coaches and freight wagons, will be built to accommodate the higher speeds achieved through the upgraded tracks. For freight operations, Pakistan Railways is relying on a dedicated fleet of 55 diesel-electric locomotives with horsepower ranging from 4,000 to 4,500. These powerful locomotives are designed to handle maximum haulage at higher speeds, which is crucial for meeting the growing demand for freight services.
Employee Welfare and Support Initiatives
Pakistan Railways, a vast organization with approximately 63,000 employees, continues to prioritize the welfare of its workforce. The department offers a range of benefits and support services, including comprehensive healthcare through a network of hospitals, dispensaries, and child healthcare units.
