The Pakistan government has announced an ambitious initiative to expand 4G services to the nation’s remote and underserved areas. This move aims to bridge the digital divide and provide equitable access to digital infrastructure across the country. Approval of Major Projects by USF Board
Under the leadership of IT Secretary and Universal Service Fund (USF) Board Chairman Zarar Khan, seven major projects have been approved to expand broadband and fiber optic infrastructure across Pakistan. With a substantial investment of Rs7.49 billion, these projects are set to transform the digital landscape in various regions.
The approved initiatives include five broadband service projects and two fiber optic deployments. These efforts will cover 940 kilometers of fiber optic cable, connecting 347 villages and 113 towns or union councils in 12 districts. This extensive network is expected to benefit approximately 2.8 million residents through fiber connectivity and provide broadband services to 965,000 individuals.

Zarar Khan emphasized the importance of the accelerated rollout, guided by Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima. The initiative is empowering thousands of skilled youth and women from remote areas by enabling their participation in freelancing and the digital startup ecosystem. The expansion of 4G services is set to unlock new economic opportunities and drive innovation in regions that have traditionally been left behind in the digital revolution.
The Universal Service Fund has already facilitated access to broadband for over 37 million people nationwide, underscoring its commitment to expanding digital access. The new projects are expected to further enhance connectivity and create a more inclusive digital economy.
Detailed Project Breakdown
USF CEO Mudassar Naveed provided additional insights into the projects. An allocation of Rs3.27 billion will be used to lay 415 kilometers of fiber optic cable in Sanghar, while Rs2.38 billion will fund 525 kilometers of cable in areas around Jhang. These strategic investments are designed to improve connectivity and support the growth of digital infrastructure in these regions.
The initiative will also extend 4G connectivity to rural areas in several districts, including Attock, Khushab, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Sheikhupura, Chiniot, Badin, and Abbottabad. By bringing high-speed internet access to these areas, the government aims to foster economic development and improve the quality of life for residents.
