Karachi Implements Speed Limits on Sharea Faisal Under E-Challan System

New Traffic Regulations Enforced Through Automated Cameras

Karachi has taken another step in its traffic management overhaul by installing speed-limit signboards along Sharea Faisal, the city’s busiest thoroughfare. According to DSP (Admin) Kashif Nadeem, the speed limits have been categorized by vehicle type: 60 km/h for cars, jeeps, and motorcycles, and 30 km/h for heavy vehicles like buses and trucks. The newly implemented e-challan system will automatically issue fines to vehicles exceeding these limits through AI-powered surveillance cameras, eliminating manual enforcement.

Sindh Government Defends E-Challan System Amid Criticism

The provincial government’s automated traffic management initiative has faced backlash from opposition parties and citizens questioning its implementation. However, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that protecting lives and property remains the administration’s top priority. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah explained that the system replaces outdated manual ticketing with a transparent, AI-driven process designed to detect violations such as speeding, red-light infractions, and helmet non-compliance without human intervention.

Expansion Plans for Karachi’s Smart Traffic Management

Currently operational with 200 cameras across Karachi, the e-challan system is set for significant expansion. Authorities plan to install 12,000 cameras throughout the city before extending the program to other districts in Sindh. The system’s integration with the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee ensures accountability and provides a mechanism for dispute resolution. This technological upgrade represents a major shift in Sindh’s approach to traffic regulation, aiming to reduce accidents and improve road discipline through consistent, unbiased enforcement.
