SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is finally set to make its debut in India, and this time, it has a powerful ally—Bharti Airtel. This partnership could be a game-changer for internet connectivity in rural and remote areas of India, where traditional broadband services struggle to reach.
What is Starlink?
Starlink, a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is a satellite-based internet service provider that aims to bring high-speed internet to even the most inaccessible regions of the world. Unlike fiber-optic or traditional broadband, Starlink uses a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide global coverage.
Why is Starlink Partnering with Bharti Airtel?
Bharti Airtel, one of India’s largest telecom operators, has been at the forefront of digital expansion in India. Its subsidiary, OneWeb, also operates LEO satellites, making it a strategic partner for Starlink. This collaboration ensures that Starrlink’s entry into the Indian market complies with regulatory policies and leverages Airtel’s infrastructure for smoother operations.
Regulatory Challenges and Government Approval
Starlink previously faced regulatory roadblocks in India. In 2021, it had to refund pre-orders after failing to secure the necessary approvals from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). With Bharti Airtel now backing its entry, Starrlink is better positioned to navigate licensing requirements and establish itself legally in the country.
