Sony is reportedly working on a new handheld gaming console aimed at expanding its influence in the portable gaming market. This device, often referred to as a potential “PS Vita 2,” follows the success of Sony’s PlayStation Portal, which primarily functioned as a streaming device for PS5 games. The new console is expected to feature more advanced capabilities, potentially including compatibility with native PS5 games, powered by a custom AMD chipset. However, this project is still in the early development stage and may not reach the market for several years​
Meanwhile, Nintendo continues to dominate the handheld gaming sector with its widely popular Switch console. Rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 have been circulating, with projections for a release in early 2025. Although Nintendo planned for a 2024 release, delays have reportedly shifted the timeline to ensure higher-quality first-party software and hardware readiness. This could open up opportunities for competitors like Sony and even Microsoft, which is rumored to be exploring handheld Xbox devices​
This escalating competition in the portable gaming industry reflects the growing demand for handheld consoles that offer cutting-edge technology and a vast library of games. Both Sony’s upcoming device and the Switch 2 will likely set new standards in this space, though the release timelines suggest Nintendo might continue leading the market for now.
