In a groundbreaking effort to tackle Punjab’s persistent smog crisis, Pakistan has successfully implemented locally developed cloud seeding technology for artificial rainfall. This innovative step marks a significant achievement for the country, which used 100% indigenous expertise for the first time, building on past experiments conducted with foreign assistance.
The operation, conducted in areas like Jhelum, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Talagang, was led by a coalition including the Punjab government, Army Aviation, the Strategic Plans Division, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The resulting rainfall is expected to alleviate dangerous air quality levels that have posed severe health risks to residents.
This success drew praise from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who highlighted the historic nature of the project, emphasizing its impact on public well-being. Senior officials also expressed optimism about future applications, suggesting similar initiatives could be rolled out across smog-hit areas like Lahore to mitigate the environmental and health challenges posed by air pollution.
