PTA Blocks Over 5,000 Mobile Phones in FY24 Amid Crackdown on Illegal Activities

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) blocked 5,294 mobile phones involved in illegal activities during the 2023-24 fiscal year. This move is part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to curb unlawful use of mobile devices across the country.

In addition to the blocked mobile phones, the PTA also disabled 4,507 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers linked to fraudulent use. Furthering its crackdown, the PTA blacklisted 113 national ID cards and issued warnings to over 19,730 mobile numbers found to be engaged in illegal activities.

Security-Driven SIM Blocking

The crackdown includes action against SIMs reported for illegal activities. According to PTA, SIMs can be blocked under various categories, especially in matters related to national security. The Ministry of Interior (MoI), Directorate General ISI, and Signals Directorate GHQ provide directives for the blocking of SIMs, particularly in cases that threaten public security.

A recent directive from the Ministry of Interior, dated July 25, 2023, led to the blocking of 465 SIM cards reportedly used by criminals in Sindh’s “Kacha” areas, notably in the Shikarpur and Ghotki districts.

Phased Approach to Combat SIM Fraud

PTA has initiated a phased strategy to address the illegal use of SIMs. The first phase, launched on August 16, 2024, targeted SIMs registered with fake credentials or canceled ID cards for deactivation. The second phase, which began on September 2, 2024, focuses on blocking SIMs tied to expired identification documents. The final phase will deactivate SIMs registered under the names of deceased individuals.

By taking these steps, the PTA has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that SIM cards and mobile devices are not used for illegal activities. The authority has made it clear that fraudulent use of mobile networks will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
